Blood Type Diet

Theory of the Blood Type Diet

Peter D'Adamo is the founder of the Blood Type Diet. According to D'Adamo everyone tolerates certain foods well depending on their blood type whilst other foods can lead to blood agglutination. He claimed that the blood type determines the body's own chemistry. Certain proteins, which are found in almost all foods, are called lectins. They are meant to be absorbed along with the food into the blood and a reaction with the blood cells takes place. Lectins found in certain foods are supposedly meant to react to the red blood cells of a certain blood type and cause agglutination. This agglutination can be harmful to the body.

Blood Group Diet: Classifying the Foods.

All foods are classified, according to blood types, into three categories: "most beneficial", "food allowed" and "food not allowed". Whoever opts to eat according to their blood type can protect themselves from a variety of illnesses.

The Blood Type Diet is meant to help people who are overweight, who have diabetes mellitus and who suffer from stomach ulcers. The diet is also meant to improve the state of health of cancer and AIDS patients.

The Development of the Blood Types according to D'Adamos' Blood Type Diet:

The blood type O developed 40.000 years ago. Back then, people mainly fed on dead animals and wild fruit. Therefore they needed a digestive system suitable for the digestion of all the meat. The Blood Type Diet has therefore concluded that people with the blood type O are mostly satisfied when they eat meat. They should avoid milk, potatoes and wheat as these products did not exist at that time. With their descendants being hunters and gatherers, it is claimed that strenuous and aggressive types of sport are most suitable for people of this blood type.

The blood type A developed about 20.000 years ago at a time when agriculture was coming into existence. It is therefore expected that grain products are most tolerated for people of this blood type. Vegetables and herbal protein contribute to their well-being. Potatoes should be avoided. Milk, butter and animal fats are also forbidden.

Individuals with blood type B developed in the Himalayas about 10.000 to 15.000 years ago. The Mongolians herded animals and are able to eat almost anything as they are relatively adaptable. They are the only group that can tolerate milk products.

The blood type AB supposedly developed 1000 years ago as a result of the "mixing" of farmers and Mongolians. Individuals of this blood type are meant to eat a combination of food from both blood types A and B. Individuals with type AB blood have neither A nor B antibodies in their blood and are therefore more protected against anti-immune illnesses. The reason for this is that their immune system is not so distinct. The dangers of the spreading of cancer cells are associated with this blood type and so D'Adamo (developer of the Blood Type Diet) suggests eating a lot of food that prevents tumour growth. Individuals with the AB blood type cannot digest meat very well. Nevertheless they need to eat meat and should therefore eat it in small amounts. Tofu provides adequate protein and is therefore recommended. Grain and milk are to be avoided.

Evaluation of the Blood Type Diet:

"It is interesting to note that we have managed to survive after centuries of allegedly breaking these rules. At the end one asks oneself how sensible this diet actually is. On the one hand human geneticists rank the development of the blood types completely differently - A is, according to them, the oldest blood type -, on the other hand the Institute for Nutritional Science at the University of Vienna reassure us that the role of lectins in the blood is overestimated and that such a blood-type-specific diet lacks any kind of fundamentals. Even the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung" - DGE - (the German Society of Nutrition) rates most herbal lectins as harmless. The agglutination of blood cells has not been confirmed in one single case. There is likewise no scientific proof that the Blood Type Diet has a positive influence on illnesses. "
